# Chronological reading mode

This is an optional, provisional reconstruction of **recording order**, not the historical dates of the events being discussed. Archive mode, source scans, translations, original part/scan identifiers, and existing links are preserved. All 714 scans appear exactly once in each mode.

## Evidence and limits

All 714 saved transcriptions were surveyed for tape headings and page sequences. Original scans were inspected at tape boundaries, conflicting headings, duplicate pages, and the proposed Tape 54 split. This was a chronology audit, not a new full transcription review. Tape labels and printed or handwritten page numbers are sometimes inconsistent; continuous passages are not broken merely to sort an isolated number.

The relative sequence follows [Bettina Stangneth, Eichmann Before Jerusalem (2014), “Dating and the Advantage of Dilettantes,” note 50](https://books.google.com/books?id=QR1mAwAAQBAJ&pg=PT143): tapes 1 through the first portion of 54, then 58–61, then the remaining portion of 54 through 57, then 62 onward. The published reconstruction was checked against the Google Books search preview on 26 September 2026. It discusses additional tapes beyond those supplied by this copy.

Exact session dates have not been assigned. Dates in quoted wartime documents do not date the interview. The catalog’s 1956–1957 range is preserved separately from this relative chronology. Associated editorial notes, covers, and handwritten annotations need not share the recording date of adjacent transcripts.

### The provisional Tape 54 boundary

Stangneth places tapes 58–61 between the two portions of Tape 54. This edition provisionally puts the break after Part IV scan 025 (printed page 9): the French-children discussion ends there, and scan 026 begins a new topic about WVHA construction responsibility. This exact page boundary is an editorial inference, not a boundary verified from audio or specified by the cited chronology. Source pages are kept whole.

### Missing material and uncertain labels

The archive jumps from Tape 5 to Tape 11. This mode does not create or reconstruct the missing material. Later apparent backward jumps, notably 51/52/53 and 66/67/68, are treated as disputed headings within continuous passages rather than newly dated sessions. This collection ends with the sequence associated with Tape 67; it is not the complete surviving recording corpus.

The initial remarks and the unlabelled prose/statistics insert are placed in an explicitly undated section after the interview sequence. This does not mean they were composed later. Duplicate scans remain adjacent and are marked. Supplementary sheets bearing a tape label remain with the associated tape, without claiming a separate date.

## Reproducibility

The reviewed placements are encoded in `scripts/build_chronology.py`. Running it validates complete coverage and regenerates `assets/chronology.json` and this map without editing source documents. New audio or a parallel archival copy may justify revising a provisional placement.
